Face The Change

"Face the Change" Graphite £900

Influenced by the photography of Alfred Cheney Johnston who took images of the Ziegfeld follies, I was interested to find out about the lives of these women in the book Jazz age Beauties by Robert Hudovernik I was struck by how strong a character many of these women possessed and their ability to adapt and change to the circumstances that faced them. The Raven the largest of the blackbird family is also the most intelligent a natural survivor and has been depicted in numerous modern contexts but I chose the raven for the connection with the God Apollo whose Chariot lead the trail for the sun during the day and its this brighter side of the raven, this intelligence and ingenuity, an ability to use cunning – this association with light, illumination, truth and goodness
